Choosing the right style of yoga for you

In order to really choose the right style of yoga it’s important to distinguish the difference between what we want, what we need and what we think we should do. Oh boy it’s tough, I know, and it’s often intertwined so let go of the ‘should’ and then find a balance between your ‘wants’ and ‘needs’.

The great thing about yoga is that it’s for everyone. With so many styles and variations and even within the same style of yoga, each class you visit, the teacher will bring their own flair, so you will never get bored. Here are some simple steps to guide you on your yogi path:

Learn about the different styles

Have a read through of the different styles of yoga first, this will give you an idea of what is out there and you will naturally gravitate towards one or two styles more. Once you discover the styles you naturally feel pulled towards then you can start to ask yourself the following two questions

What do you want out of the practice?

Be really honest with yourself about what you want. Do you want something that is vigorous and sweaty or still and slow? Are you seeking deep philosophy or light and fun? Do you want to improve your physical abilities or do you want to deal with your emotions and dive into spirituality? Keep going deeper and deeper into what you want. The answers will grow and evolve as you do, so it is a great question to revisit later down the track.

What do you need in your life right now?

Some of your needs may clash with your wants and some will align, so focus on what aligns and follow that path. Maybe you have a highly stressful and stimulating job so need something slower but you usually enjoy something more vigorous Maybe you are wanting to get back into physical exercise and need to simply move your body. The more honest you can be with yourself the better.

Trial and Error

Like almost everything in life, you’re going to have to experiment a little. I remember the first time I did yoga I basically hated it! So there will be bumps in the road but if at first you don’t succeed try again. The wonderful thing is almost every yoga studio has Introductory Offers for new students, so shop around in your area and try as many studios and teachers as you can.

Don’t get too attached

A huge part of finding the right style for you is accepting that each day and each phase of your life, you will need and want something else. So, entering your yoga journey with an open mind and willingness to go with flow will help to have a life long journey with this beautiful practice.

Remember there is no one magic pill for everything and there is no one magic style of yoga for everything. You will know you have found the right style/styles for you when you feel safe and supported in a class, when you can laugh at yourself in a challenging pose or when you look forward to your class.

And when you walk through the studio door and automatically feel a sense of ease overcome you, you know you have arrived home.
